Gardening
Tips
for the Forest St. Community Gardens
Welcome
to the Forest St. Community Garden Growing Season!
Here
are some frequently asked questions:
Tools:
The "corn crib" shed has gardening tools.
Please contact us to learn the current lock combination.
Please make sure to lock up if you are the last gardener
around. |
Hoses:
Please "reel" up hoses after use and hang
on the t-post/reel by water outlets. Please weed the
things growing up the t-stake - to keep valves visable
and accessible. If you are the last gardener using water,
please turn off water at the base of the hose and at
the central water control between the South Garden and
Shared Garden. If you are the last gardener present,
please shut off water at the main - all to help prevent
plumbing and hose failures. |
Compost
Bins: Please put garden debris in the compost
bin - we have defined what goes where on the posts.
|
Green
Bags: There are green bags throughout the
gardens. These are used to put weeds in that we don't
compost. Please pound off the soil and dispose of the
weeds and their roots. (suggestion - take saved dirt
and fill craters and ankle twisters throughout the green
space mix in grass seed occasionally.) |
Mowing/Edging:
Please mow the perimeter of your plot. Gardeners
can take turns. The grass and sandburs crept onto the
peripheral land and narrowed or shortened the plots
by at least a foot. We have tilled them out and marked
them for each plot holder. The City will mow common
areas but will not get close to each garden plot. (Hand
held weed whacker is in the corn crib - please wear
protective glasses and long pants.) |
Tilling:
There is a shared tiller by the compost bins. It will
require a dose of starter fluid until it has been run
enough to have the engine lubed and starting easily.
If your plot needs a touch up feel free to use or ask
garden coordinators to help. |
We're
trying to keep up to date on the Face
Book Forest St. Garden Page If you have questions
feel free to contact us - we will get back to you within
a day or so.
You can call us but do so sparingly - Bob and I are volunteers
- not paid to help with the gardens.
